[News]: Drama Inspired By Life Of Joanna Coles Picked Up To Seri...
Published by:

Freeform is ready to explore its issues.

The Disney-owned cable network has handed out a series order to Cosmopolitan magazine drama The Bold Type (formerly known as Issues), The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The 12-episode drama will debut in summer 2017. Ahead of its time in front of press at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, the former ABC Family also renewed The Fosters for a fifth season, which will see the critical favorite hit the 100-episode milestone.

Previously developed at NBC, The Bold Type — inspired by the life of Hearst Magazine Chief Content Officer (and former Cosmo Editor-in-Chief) Joanna Coles — offers a glimpse into the outrageous lives and loves of those responsible for a global women’s magazine called Scarlet. The rising generation of Scarlet women lean on one another as they find their own voices in a sea of intimidating leaders. Together, they explore sexuality, identity, love and fashion.

Bold Type hails from Universal Television — marking a key off-network sale for the studio and a rare studio buy for Freeform. Parenthood alum Sarah Watson created the drama and serves as showrunner. David Bernad (Superstore), Coles and Ruben Fleischer (Superstore) executive produce. Holly Whidden co-executive produces the Universal Television and The District drama.

Faking It favorite Katie Stevens stars in the drama as Jane, who has just been promoted to her dream job as a writer for Scarlet magazine. Equal parts passion and determination, she is sometimes a little overwhelmed by life in New York. Melora Hardin (Transparent) stars as the editor-in-chief of the show’s magazine.

The Bold Type is our love letter to modern feminism and aims to be a destination for authentic female friendship and empowerment,” said Freeform exec vp programming Karey Burke.

[News]: ‘Faking It’ Star Katie Stevens to Topline Fr...

She'll be joined by Meghann Fahy and Aisha Dee in the pilot from 'Parenthood' grad Sarah Watson.

Freeform has assembled the cast for its Cosmopolitan drama pilot Issues.

Set to lead the cast is Faking It grad Katie Stevens in the pilot inspired by the life of Cosmo editor-in-chief Joanna Coles.

Previously developed at NBC, it offers a glimpse into the outrageous lives and loves of those responsible for a global women’s magazine. Their struggles are about finding your identity, managing friendships and getting your heart broken, all while wearing the perfect jeans to flatter any body type.

Stevens will star as Jane, who has just been promoted to her dream job as a writer for Scarlet Magazine. Equal parts passion and determination, she is sometimes a little overwhelmed by life in New York. Aisha Dee (Chasing Life) is set as Kat, also recently promoted at Scarlet to social media director; she is bold, fearless and not intimidated by anyone. Meghann Fahy (Political Animals) will portray Sutton, the last of her friends to be an assistant at Scarlet. Sutton is humble and dependable, but her workload comes at two speeds — crushing or overwhelming. Furthermore, Sutton is keeping a secret from her friends.

They join previously cast Melora Hardin (Transparent) as the editor-in-chief of the show’s magazine; Sam Page (House of Cards) as the lawyer for the publishing group; and Matt Ward (Remedy) as a fellow writer who is smitten with Jane.

Issues was created by Sarah Watson (Parenthood). David Bernad (Superstore), Coles and Ruben Fleischer (Superstore) executive produce. Holly Whidden co-executive produces the Universal Television and The District entry.

Stevens is repped by CAA, Impression Entertainment and Bloom Hergott. The role marks her first gig since MTV’s Faking It was canceled earlier this year. Dee, who returns to Freeform following Chasing Life, is with Gersh. Fahy (One Life to Live) is with Gersh and Untitled.

Todrick Hall Dishes On ‘Beauty And The Beat’ Co-Star Katie S...
Published by:

If there are three things the Internet loves, it’s pizza, cats and Disney parodies.

After all, when “Faking It” star Katie Stevens and YouTube sensation Todrick Hall transported “Beauty and the Beast” from the small streets of France to the ’hood, they struck gold. “Beauty and the Beat,” their mega-hit video, has over six million views and counting.

Now, two years after the parody’s debut, Todrick is opening up about collaborating with his former “American Idol” costar — the duo hit a high note during season nine’s Hollywood Week — and Katie’s natural ability to charm anyone she meets. (Just like Belle.)

“Working with Katie is always a pleasure. She’s so much fun — she’s so down for everything,” T recently shared with MTV News. “We were walking around through the hood, the ghetto. Some people would have been really scared to be walking around in a blue, semi-ball gown on just a summer day in the hood, but she was so nice, going up to people, shaking their hands, giving them dab, throwing up the deuces. You can’t just ask for a better person than Katie Stevens. She’s awesome.”

Now that Toddy is set to join the MTV family (his much-anticipated show premieres on Aug. 31 at 10/9c), should fans expect another Todrick-Katie collaboration in the near future? “Faking It: The Musical” perhaps? Hester High would never be the same…

Watch the clip below to hear his answer, and be sure to stay with MTV News for more updates on “Todrick” and “Faking It” — which BOTH premiere on August 31!
